Since this summer Dynamics 365 for Marketing is available for customers from Germany. After the less successful attempt to integrate marketing automation into Dynamics CRM with the acquisition of MarketingPilot, Microsoft tries it with a complete redesign. A lot of companies now ask themselves if they should obtain the well-tried ClickDimensions or rather the official Microsoft product. We can tell you in the forefront, giving a clear answer to this question is difficult.

In the following blog article, we would like to give you a brief insight on the price differences and differences in the usability of the two solutions. For many, Microsoft's pricing model was certainly a surprise. Linking the price to the number of contacts (active or inactive does not matter!) has scared smaller companies with a high number of contacts. But let's take a look at the whole situation in detail.

Pricing for Dynamics 365 for Marketing

Organizations with a Customer Engagement Plan (version 9.0 and higher) with at least 10 licenses will receive Dynamics 365 for Marketing for free. However, this free license is capped at 2,000 contacts. For 506 € per month, the number of contacts can be extended to 10,000 contacts. Furthermore, it is possible to purchase 5.000 additional contacts. The additional costs are 210,80 € per month.

With any Customer Engagement Application or Customer Engagement Plan with less than 10 licenses, the monthly price for the first 10,000 contacts is $ 632.50. Furthermore, 5,000 additional contacts cost € 210.80.

If a company decides to purchase the stand-alone version of Dynamics 365 for Marketing, € 1,264.90 will apply for the first 10,000 contacts. Costs for additional contacts are the same as for the previous price models.

The number of e-mails that can be sent also depends on the number of contacts in the system. You can always send 10 times as many emails as there are contacts in the system.

Pricing for ClickDimensions

ClickDimensions has two different pricing models linked to the amount of e-mails that can be sent. Also the functional scope differs significantly and only the advanced / business pricing model is really comparable to Dynamics 365 for Marketing.

The basic price model offers the possibility to send up to 50,000 emails per year. The costs are 431 € per month.

The Advanced / Business variant gives you the possibility to send up to 200,000 emails per year. This pricing model includes Campaign Automation, Landing Pages, Lead / Contact Scoring, Event Management, and Survey / Subscription Management functionalities. The costs are 605 €. Additional 100,000 emails cost 86 € or another 200,000 173 €. Minimum requirement is, of course, at least the Dynamics 365 Sales App.

Differences in the Usability

Most of the features of Dynamics 365 for Marketing are directly accessible via the Marketing Tile in CRM. In this case ClickDimensions and Dynamics 365 for Marketing differ only slightly from each other. But what makes the difference is the integration of Dynamics 365 standard entities. The best example is the marketing list, which was replaced by the segmentation in Dynamics 365 for Marketing. The "old" marketing lists can no longer be used here. From now on, contacts must be added to email recipient lists using queries (similar to advanced search). In general, it takes some time to get warm with Dynamics 365 for Marketing. However, Microsoft is clearly trying to integrate all functionalities within the Microsoft world. For example, Event Management is realized via Microsoft Portals, the questionnaires on Voice of the Customer and Social Marketing Integration via LinkedIn. Compared to ClickDimensions everything feels a bit fresher and newer.

ClickDimensions is integrated directly into CRM as an add-in and CRM standard entities are strongly integrated. Users familiar with the Dynamics CRM UI can usually start working directly with ClickDimensions. All functionalities seem a bit more mature in ClickDimensions. Which is certainly not surprising, especially as the solution has been on the market for years and is constantly being further developed. When it comes to reporting, ClickDimensions definitely is ahead. While all data is stored in Dynamics storage (this can be quite expensive for an online instance), it is an advantage at the same time, because the data can be easily prepared to use it in CRM dashboards or workflows.

Who is the Winner?

As mentioned at the beginning, to choose a clear winner is not easy. In the end, it depends on the personal preferences and the size of the company, which solution is the right one. Dynamics 365 for Marketing is just at the beginning and Microsoft will surely surprise us with one or the other feature. At the moment, ClickDimensions is in the lead, at least for the INKUBIT.
