Tutorial: Activating the Follow function for custom entities

Reading time: 2 minutes

Most users will be familiar with the follow function for data records in Dynamics 365. The function allows you to see all activities of the followed data record in your personal activity feed. For example, it is possible to follow a customer and see which support tickets are still open or have already been resolved without calling up the customer record. The follow function is activated from the start for most standard entities. But what about custom entities that you have created yourself? Users often encounter an obstacle here that takes time and nerves to overcome. We can assure you that this setting can be fixed quickly so that you can get on with your work in just a few minutes! Read our blog article to learn how to unlock the custom entities feature.

How do I activate the custom entities?

To enable the function for the new entity it is necessary to access the settings for the Activity Feed. These settings can only be accessed by a CRM administrator. Therefore, you must first make sure that you have the appropriate security role, or alternatively contact your CRM administrator.

  1. Select the advanced settings and then the Activity Feed Configuration.
  2. Make sure that the Post Configurations view is selected and you have refreshed the entities. Otherwise you may not be able to find the new entity in the list.
  3. After the refresh the entity should be visible in the view. Select it and click on activate.
  4. The note on publishing the entity appears. Go to Solutions under Settings and publish all customizations.
  5. If you return to the custom entity after the process, you can see the follow function.
  6. In addition, two new views are available.
