Tutorial: Enabling the Follow Feature for Custom Entities

Reading time: 2 minutes

Most users are familiar with the "Follow" feature for records in Dynamics 365. This feature allows you to view all activities related to the record you’re following in your personal activity feed. For example, you can follow a customer to see which support tickets are still open or have already been resolved without having to open the customer record. For most standard entities, the "Follow" feature is enabled by default. But what about custom entities you’ve created yourself? Users often run into a hurdle here that takes time and patience to overcome. We can assure you that this setting can be fixed quickly, so you can get back to work in just a few minutes! Read our blog post to learn how to enable the feature for custom entities.

How do I unlock the custom entities?

To enable the feature for the new entity, you need to access the Activity Feed settings. These settings can only be accessed by a CRM administrator. Therefore, you must first ensure that you have the appropriate security role, or contact your CRM administrator.

  1. Go to the advanced settings, then select Activity Feed Configuration.
  2. Make sure that the "Post Configurations" view is selected and that you have refreshed the entities. Otherwise, you may not be able to find the new entity in the list.
  3. After refreshing, the entity should be visible in the view. Select it and click to activate it.
  4. A prompt to publish the entity will appear. Go to Solutions under Settings and publish all customizations.
  5. When you return to the custom entity after the operation, you will see the follow-up function.
  6. In addition, two new views are available.
