What is an AI-first company—and are you already one?

AI-first company or not? You can tell in your day-to-day work.
Meetings drag on longer than necessary, decisions are based on past experience rather than real-time data, and often it’s individual employees who coordinate processes “in their heads.” Perhaps you already feel that things could be better—more efficient, clearer, faster.

And yes, maybe you’ve already tried out ChatGPT. In marketing. In sales. For the first draft of a proposal or to brainstorm ideas. But let’s be honest:
Is that enough to be an AI-first company?

What does “AI First” really mean?

“AI-First” is more than just a buzzword. It’s not about simply using AI somewhere—it’s about fundamentally transforming the way a company operates.

Three brief distinctions:

  • AI-enabled: AI tools are used in certain areas.

  • AI-ready: The data foundation is in place—but not much is happening yet.

  • AI-First: AI is a strategic component of value creation and an integral part of every decision.

An AI-first company thinks differently:
It plans, makes decisions, and optimizes based on intelligent systems. And in doing so, it transforms not only tools—but also mindsets, processes, and roles.

Why is this particularly relevant in the professional services sector?

Service companies don't sell a product. They sell expertise, time, project quality, and trust.

And it is precisely in this context that typical challenges arise:

  • Project planning relies heavily on gut instinct.

  • Knowledge is scattered—in people's minds, in notes, in Excel spreadsheets.

  • Processes vary from team to team.

  • Decisions take time—because information is missing or has to be gathered manually.

AI-first approaches can offer enormous advantages here:

  • Better resource planning through forecasts based on historical project data

  • Faster proposal processes with automated analysis and text generation

  • Greater transparency for everyone involved —without any extra effort

  • Less manual work when preparing reports, forecasts, or conducting quality assurance

Ask yourself:
How many of your decisions are truly data-driven—and how many are based on intuition, experience, or spontaneous decisions?

Am I already AI-first? A quick self-assessment

Not sure where you stand? Here's a quick checklist:

✅ Do we have a clear vision of how and where AI should be used in our company?
✅ Are our decisions actively supported by data—not just by experience?
✅ Are there productive AI applications—beyond pilot projects?
✅ Is the topic of AI visible at the C-suite level and strategically anchored?
✅ Can departments work independently with AI-powered tools?

If you were only able to check one or two boxes here: No problem. The journey begins right there.

How do you take the first step—without turning everything upside down right away?

Many companies are reluctant to integrate AI into their strategic plans. The topic seems too daunting. Too technical. Too expensive. But that is precisely where the misunderstanding lies.

An AI-first mindset develops step by step. For example:

  • Start with a clear, data-driven use case (e.g., quote automation, customer communication, forecasting).

  • Improving data quality – fewer data silos, more shared foundations.

  • Train, empower, and engage employees.

  • Bringing IT, business units, and senior management together around the table.

Technology can help—but it’s not the first step.
The first step is a conscious decision: “We want to work smarter—and we know that won’t happen on its own.”

Conclusion: AI-First is a cultural shift—not just a tool upgrade

A company that considers itself an "AI First" organization doesn't just think in terms of software. It thinks in terms of better decisions, more sustainable processes, and a smarter organization.
